Vend-A-Quote & Vend-A-Poem

Sometimes that proverbial "silver lining" can be true. When our building got condemned and we had to move, one of the many unexpected opportunities to come from the situation was the opportunity to ask the question, "What DO we want the bookstore to look like?" When we bought the business from Mr. D it was firmly entrenched in the 22 N. Front location. Outside of streamlining some of the shelving we didn't really change much. But when we began looking for a new location we began asking ourselves if we could have anything, what would it be? After we got past the absolute fantasy of brass rails, marble stairs and mahogany furniture with glass fronted cabinets (sigh....). I wanted things in the store that were different, things that were fun, things that people would talk about and remember. It is hard to find ways to set yourself apart as an independent bookstore in this day and age. Then one day it came to me: rather than candy vending machines- what about quote and poem vending machines? Kind of like fortune cookies... they would be fun, memorable and so far I hadn't seen anything quite like what I had in mind. The quotes have been tremendous joy for us to put together. Ranging from Voltaire to the Muppets and (one from a staff member) they range from humorous to commentaries on censorship. The Vend-A-Poem needed short enough poems to fit on a small piece of paper that were in the Public Domain. We found about 30 that we liked; some were sappy, some evocative and few funny ones just to keep it interesting. We love them and other people do, too. One young lady who comes in almost daily uses them like a Tarot Deck. She asks a question them gets a quote or poem to see what kind of advice they offer. It’s as much fun for us as it is for her, maybe more for us… Anyway, come check out our Vend-A-Quote & Vend-A-Poem machines – we hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
