Why are books important?

I have been thinking about this question a lot lately as I personally handle close to 75,000 books (our current estimate of inventory). For those of you who don’t know, Daddy is a Former Chair of the New Hanover County Public Library Board. We are a family of bibliophiles who have always treasured learning and access to information. So for the last couple of months while immersed in this chaos trying to organize the store I have been thinking a lot about why books are so necessary to a civilized society. There are as many different answers to that question as there are people on the planet, but the New Hanover County Public Library Mission Statement seems to sum it up:

The mission of the New Hanover County Public Library is to provide all citizens with the greatest return on taxpayer investment by:
o Opening doors to a world of information
o Transforming information in to knowledge
o Promoting reading and literacy
o Contributing to personal enrichment
o Facilitating public discourse
o Preserving the historical record of the Lower Cape Fear
o Providing exposure to a diversity of cultures
o Enhancing individual and collective economic growth
In case you are not familiar with the Friends of the Public Library, they are a volunteer group that supports the Library. (http://www.nhclibraryfriends.org/) Twice a year they hold a HUGE book sale to raise money to support Library programs. Personally, I would encourage you to join the Friends of the Public Library to support our wonderful community – and don’t forget the book sales!
